Die Roller for RPGs 2 is now Fritillon. Same app, same developer, same dice, and your Sets, Groups, and roll history all came along. Version 3.3 is out today on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Why the new name? Fritillon comes from the Latin fritillus, a dice cup, the one on the new icon. The same word named the fritillary flowers, likely for their checkered petals, and the fritillary butterflies, whose wings carry the same pattern. It’s a name that belongs to this app, which “Die Roller for RPGs 2” never quite did.

What’s new in 3.3: multi-pool rolls. At the table, a damage roll is rarely one handful of identical dice. A magical longsword might be 1d10 slashing plus 1d4 thunder; a fireball-style spell might be 8d6 that explode on a 6. Now one roll can hold several pools, and each pool keeps its own name, damage type, and rules:

  • drop the highest or lowest dice
  • reroll once, or reroll until a die beats a number
  • exploding dice

Every pool shows its own subtotal, live and in your roll history, along with every reroll and explosion. Multi-pool rolls are free; the optional Dice Library lets you save them as Sets.

One heads-up: searching the App Store for the old name may not find the app anymore. If you’re telling a friend, it’s Fritillon now.

Fritillon has its own home at fritillon.com, and it’s on the App Store.
